Boscombe gets its fair share of criticism, but sometimes that means the things worth celebrating don’t get nearly enough attention.
The Royal Arcade is one of them.
When we visited we found one of the most characterful independent shopping spaces in the area: a beautiful Victorian arcade filled with local businesses, unusual finds, places to eat and drink, and a genuine sense of community. Despite being locals ourselves, we were genuinely surprised...
Beneath its enormous glass roof, the arcade was buzzing. Market stalls filled the central walkway, people wandered between shops and every unit offered something completely different from the last.
It felt creative, independent and unmistakably Boscombe in the best possible way.
The Royal Arcade has stood at the heart of Boscombe since 1892 and remains one of the area's most distinctive historic buildings.
Its soaring glazed roof, decorative arches and Victorian architecture create a shopping environment unlike almost anywhere else locally. More than 130 years after opening, however, this isn't simply a building preserved for its history. The Royal Arcade feels like a space finding new energy.
Today, every unit in the arcade is let for the first time in around 40 years, a particularly impressive milestone at a time when empty shopfronts have become increasingly familiar on high streets across the country.
Perhaps our favourite thing about The Royal Arcade was just how different everything felt.
Instead of rows of familiar chains, you'll find an eclectic collection of independent businesses spanning vintage fashion, crafts and handmade goods, collectables, artwork, alternative stores, alongside cafés, coffee spots and places to stop for brunch. One shop might be packed with vintage clothing, the next with handmade jewellery or spiritual curiosities, while another offers somewhere to sit down with a coffee.
There's a genuine sense of discovery as you walk through The Royal Arcade that's unlike anywhere else.
Our visit happened to coincide with one of the markets hosted inside the arcade, transforming the central walkway into an even busier showcase of independent traders and makers.
Tables filled the space with clothing, artwork, jewellery, crafts, collectables and wonderfully unusual finds, while shoppers moved between the temporary stalls and permanent businesses.
Markets and community events have become another part of The Royal Arcade's identity, giving local creatives and traders somewhere to showcase what they do while bringing people together beneath its historic roof.
The Royal Arcade feels like exactly the kind of place that deserves more attention.
Independent businesses are filling historic shopfronts. Local traders are being given somewhere to showcase their work. Markets and events are bringing people together. And one of the area's most beautiful buildings is full of life again.
What stood out to us most was how local everything felt. There's personality here, things you won't find everywhere else and businesses that feel like genuine expressions of the people running them.
We went in expecting a quick wander and ended up spending far longer exploring than we'd planned.
