Brilliant Ideas for a Girls’ Day Out in Bournemouth

A girls’ day out in Bournemouth does not have to follow the familiar pattern of shopping, lunch and cocktails. We can paint our own pottery, spend the afternoon beside a heated outdoor pool, race over the sea on a zip wire or explore one of the town’s most beautiful buildings before finishing with Ibiza anthems at sunset.

These five Bournemouth experiences reflect some of the lifestyle themes currently proving especially appealing: creative socialising, coastal wellness, nostalgic escapism and activities that give us something memorable to share afterwards.

Creative socialising offers a relaxed alternative to sitting across a restaurant table for several hours, particularly when everyone leaves with something to remember the day by.

All Fired Up is an independent paint-your-own pottery studio and coffee shop in Bournemouth town centre. We begin by choosing a ceramic piece before decorating it with our own colours, patterns or illustrations. The studio then glazes and fires the finished item, ready for collection later.

We could each decorate a mug, trinket dish or small plate, choose a shared theme or attempt to paint something for another member of the group. The results do not have to look professional; much of the enjoyment comes from seeing how differently everyone interprets the same idea.

The studio recommends booking ahead, particularly for groups, as tables can fill quickly. Drinks and refreshments are available while we paint, allowing us to catch up without the pressure of constantly finding new conversation.

It is a particularly good opening activity because it feels sociable but unhurried - and gives us a handmade souvenir rather than another photograph stored on a phone.

For a more indulgent day, The Nici brings resort-style wellness to Bournemouth’s West Cliff.

Its spa facilities include heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a hydrotherapy pool, aromatherapy sauna, steam room and relaxation spaces. The 30-metre outdoor pool sits within sea-view gardens, surrounded by loungers, cabanas and firepits, creating an atmosphere that can feel much closer to an overseas hotel than central Bournemouth.

Spa-day packages vary, but current options can combine facility access with a treatment and lunch at the hotel’s South Beach restaurant. One advertised package includes a 60-minute treatment, two-course lunch and use of the pools and spa from £129 per person. Prices and inclusions should be checked when booking.

This works well when the group wants time together without needing a packed itinerary. We can move between the pools, book treatments and meet again for lunch rather than trying to keep everyone occupied with the same activity all day.

The spa also suits the current preference for experience-led celebrations: instead of exchanging presents, we can spend money on time together and return home feeling as though we have taken a short coastal break.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum gives us culture, beautiful interiors and afternoon tea in one place.

The extraordinary East Cliff house is filled with paintings, decorative art and objects collected by Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes. Its richly decorated rooms make the visit feel more like exploring an eccentric private home than walking through a conventional gallery.

For summer 2026, the museum is hosting Flower Fairies: Enchantment by the Sea, inspired by Cicely Mary Barker’s illustrations. The exhibition runs until 4 October and fits neatly with the continuing appetite for nostalgic, romantic and fairy-inspired visual culture.

After exploring the galleries, we can stop at the museum café for tea, light refreshments or a pre-booked afternoon tea. The café is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and entry to the café and its gallery does not require museum admission.

This is the most elegant option on the list and would suit birthdays, reunions or a quieter day with friends. It also provides some of Bournemouth’s most distinctive interiors for photographs, although visitors should always follow the museum’s current photography rules.

A girls’ day does not have to be gentle.

Bournemouth’s PierZip is the world’s first pier-to-shore zip wire, beginning from a tower around 250 metres out to sea and ending on the beach. Two parallel wires allow friends to take part together and race towards the shoreline.

The anticipation is part of the experience. We climb the tower, look back across Bournemouth Bay and then launch above the waves before landing on the sand.

No specialist experience is required, although age, height and weight restrictions apply. The attraction is operating daily through the 2026 summer holiday period, but advance booking is recommended because popular sessions can become busy.

This is an excellent choice for a group that would rather collect a shared story than spend the day moving between bars. Even the friend who is least certain about taking part can become the official photographer from the beach.

Key West at the end of Bournemouth Pier provides two memorable ways to finish a summer girls’ day.

On Sundays, the venue hosts its free Sunset Club, combining live DJ sets, cocktails, food and uninterrupted views across Bournemouth Bay. The 2026 season runs every Sunday from 19 July until 30 August, with music beginning at 4pm and continuing towards sunset.

We can arrive while the beach is still busy, find a place on the terrace and watch the atmosphere change as the afternoon light softens. The soundtrack moves between chilled music and familiar Ibiza-inspired dance anthems, creating a relaxed Balearic feel without leaving Bournemouth.

For a more dramatic ending, Key West is also one of the closest places to watch Bournemouth’s Friday-night summer fireworks. The displays take place at 10pm every Friday from 24 July until 28 August 2026, with fireworks launched over the water to the east of the pier.

Key West opens later on these evenings, with food, drinks and free live music available before selected displays. Tables are offered on a walk-in basis and the venue is likely to become busy, so arriving earlier gives us a better chance of finding a good position.

Whether we choose Sunday cocktails at sunset or Friday music followed by fireworks, it offers a fitting final stop after pottery painting, the spa or an afternoon beside the sea.
