A Taste of Naples Arrives in Christchurch at BUCO Artisan Pizzeria

There's something special about visiting a restaurant during its opening week. The excitement is tangible, conversations fill the room and every table is occupied by diners eager to experience something new. That was exactly the atmosphere we found when we visited BUCO Artisan Pizzeria, Christchurch's newest independent Italian restaurant.

Despite it being the middle of the week, the restaurant was already full of guests enjoying their meals, creating a lively yet welcoming atmosphere that immediately suggested this was somewhere Christchurch had been waiting for!

What makes BUCO stand out isn't just its authentic Neapolitan pizza, but the story behind it. Built by a local family whose years of travelling and discovering food across Italy, New York and beyond inspired a long-held ambition.

Owner Matteo explained that creating the menu became a passion project in itself. Drawing inspiration from family favourites and memorable meals experienced while travelling, narrowing down the options proved surprisingly difficult. 

Today, the menu offers an impressive selection of 27 handcrafted pizzas, alongside freshly prepared pasta dishes, crisp salads, antipasti freddi and caldi, homemade dips and indulgent Italian desserts. Every dish feels intentionally chosen, giving guests plenty of variety while staying true to the restaurant's authentic Italian roots.

Inspired by traditional Neapolitan methods, each pizza is prepared using carefully crafted dough before being cooked at high temperatures to create that signature light, airy and slightly charred crust. Combined with premium ingredients, every bite feels fresh, balanced and full of flavour.

The drinks menu deserves just as much attention. Looking beyond the familiar soft drinks, we enjoyed trying some authentic Italian favourites, the Sarti Spritz and San Pellegrino Chinotto. They offered bold, bittersweet flavours that perfectly complemented the food and added another authentic touch to the experience. Vegetarian options, vegan cheese and gluten-free pizza bases also ensure more diners can enjoy the experience without compromise.

To finish, we ordered an Affogato, a beautifully simple Italian classic consisting of creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a freshly poured double espresso. It was the perfect end to the meal, rounding off an evening that felt authentic from start to finish.

While the food undoubtedly impresses, what stood out just as much during our visit was the people behind it.

From Matteo through to every member of the team, there was a genuine warmth and enthusiasm that made the restaurant feel instantly welcoming. Questions were answered with confidence, recommendations were offered with genuine passion and it was clear that everyone involved was proud to be sharing something they had worked so hard to create.

The restaurant itself reflects that same personality. Stylish yet relaxed, the interiors create a welcoming space that feels equally suited to a casual lunch, family gathering or evening with friends, while the outdoor seating provides the perfect setting to enjoy Christchurch on a sunny afternoon. Inspired by the traditions of Italian dining, the experience encourages guests to slow down, share good food and enjoy time together.
