Boscombe West is set to benefit from up to £20 million of government investment over the next decade. Unlike a traditional regeneration scheme with every project decided in advance, the Pride in Place programme will give residents, businesses and community organisations a central role in choosing how the money is spent. Boscombe West has secured one of the most significant long-term investments in its recent history, with up to £20 million set to be spent improving the area over the next decade.
The money is being provided through the UK Government’s Pride in Place programme, which is designed to place local communities at the centre of regeneration.
Rather than arriving with a completed list of projects, the programme will allow people who live and work in Boscombe West to help decide what improvements should be prioritised.
The investment is expected to provide up to £2 million annually for ten years, giving Boscombe West an opportunity to plan beyond quick fixes and isolated projects.
Funding could support improvements to neighbourhood spaces, community facilities, local projects, events and initiatives that strengthen wellbeing, culture and pride in the area.
The precise projects have not yet been confirmed. That is an important part of the programme: the priorities will be shaped locally rather than being entirely decided elsewhere.
It means the investment could respond to what residents believe would make the greatest difference to everyday life in Boscombe West, whether that involves parks, youth provision, public spaces, community facilities or support for the local high street.
A dedicated Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board will guide how the funding is used.
The board will include residents, community representatives, the local MP, council representatives and partner organisations. An independent chair will provide leadership and help ensure the process remains community-led and inclusive.
Its responsibilities will include speaking with the wider community, establishing a shared long-term vision, setting investment priorities and helping create and deliver a dedicated Pride in Place plan for Boscombe West.
This approach could be particularly important in an area as varied as Boscombe, where residents, independent businesses, community organisations and cultural groups may each have different ideas about what improvement should look like.
The Pride in Place funding is separate from the existing Bournemouth Town Deal investment already supporting regeneration across Boscombe.
That earlier programme has contributed to projects including new homes and community facilities around Hawkwood Road, high-street improvements, digital connectivity, business support and changes to local walking and cycling routes.
The additional £20 million therefore represents another substantial chapter in Boscombe’s wider story rather than simply a new name for funding that had already been announced.
It also takes a different approach. While several Towns Fund projects already have defined plans, Pride in Place will develop its priorities through continued local participation.

Although no final spending programme has been agreed, the funding creates opportunities that could extend beyond individual community projects.
Better public spaces, cultural activity, local events and improved community facilities can all encourage more people to spend time in an area. In turn, that can support independent businesses and help make neighbourhood centres feel more active and welcoming.
Boscombe already has a distinctive mixture of shops, cafés, markets, creative businesses and historic spaces such as the Royal Arcade. The challenge is connecting those strengths and ensuring investment delivers improvements that local people can see and use.

The full effect of this investment will not be visible immediately. A ten-year programme requires consultation, planning and careful decisions about which projects can produce the most meaningful results.
However, that long timeframe is also one of its greatest strengths.
Instead of relying solely on short-term interventions, Boscombe West has an opportunity to create a coordinated plan shaped by the people who understand the neighbourhood best.
If the programme succeeds, its legacy will not simply be the amount of money spent. It will be found in better-used spaces, stronger community connections and improvements that continue to benefit Boscombe long after the initial funding period ends.
