There are few combinations more closely associated with Bournemouth than freshly cooked fish and chips beside the sea.

Whether we want a traditional takeaway to carry down to the beach, a relaxed family meal or a table overlooking the water, Bournemouth offers plenty of different ways to enjoy this seaside favourite.

Our selection stretches from long-established neighbourhood chip shops to restaurants on the pier and Southbourne clifftop. Some are all about traditional cod and chips wrapped to take away, while others add sea views, drinks and comfortable table service to the experience.

This family-run Westbourne institution has been serving fish and chips since 1989. Visitors can choose between the comfortable restaurant and the separate takeaway, making it equally suitable for a proper sit-down meal or something to collect on the way towards Alum Chine.

The independent, family-run Southbourne restaurant builds its menus around locally sourced seafood and ingredients from trusted producers. Its approach feels more restaurant-led than a traditional neighbourhood chippy, making it a strong choice when we want fresh fish, attentive table service and a relaxed evening meal.

Menus change to reflect seasonal availability, so check the current selection before visiting if fish and chips are the deciding factor. SOBO also offers a collection service for selected restaurant-quality meals and platters, although this differs from a conventional fish and chip takeaway.

“Smithson’s” is a traditional neighbourhood chip shop on Seabourne Road, positioned between Pokesdown and Southbourne.

This is primarily a takeaway rather than somewhere for a long sit-down meal, making it a good choice when we want classic fish and chips without the atmosphere or prices of a large seafront restaurant.

It is also within relatively easy reach of Southbourne Beach, although collecting by car may be more convenient if we are planning to eat beside the sea.

Smithson’s does not appear to operate a dedicated official website, so opening times and dietary requirements should be confirmed directly before making a special journey.

“Ricky’s” brings a more contemporary feel to the traditional fish and chip shop.

Based on Belle Vue Road, the takeaway combines familiar fish and chips with street-food-inspired choices and a broader menu. It is a convenient option for anyone staying around Southbourne, Hengistbury Head or Tuckton and looking for food to collect.

Its position also puts it within easy reach of Southbourne Beach, so we can take our order towards the coast when the weather is on our side.

For convenience and location, few Bournemouth fish and chip restaurants are better placed than “Harry Ramsden’s”.

Situated beside Bournemouth Pier and the beach, the restaurant has extensive indoor seating as well as a takeaway service. Its Bournemouth branch can accommodate hundreds of diners, making it particularly practical for families, larger groups and busy summer days when smaller restaurants may struggle to find space. 

Its location means we can choose a sit-down meal or collect fish and chips before finding a spot on the sand. The company publishes detailed allergen information, although anyone with a serious allergy should confirm the current preparation arrangements with the restaurant.

“Café Riva” gives us the option of enjoying fish and chips with impressive views across the Bournemouth coastline.

Located on Southbourne clifftop opposite Fisherman’s Walk, this relaxed café serves home-battered fish and chips from its lunch menu. We can eat inside, sit outside when the weather allows or request a takeaway to carry down towards the beach.

The café is family-friendly and dog-friendly, while its position makes it easy to combine lunch with a walk along the clifftop or Southbourne promenade.

“Key West” is a full-service bar and restaurant rather than a traditional chip shop. Its signature fish and chips combines hand-battered fish with seasoned chips, garden peas, lemon and homemade tartare sauce.

The greatest attraction is the setting. Large windows, outside tables and panoramic coastal views create a sit-down experience suited to holidays, family days out and leisurely lunches rather than a quick takeaway.
