Bringing a taste of New York to Bournemouth, Bagels by Soho is a dedicated bagel and coffee shop on Holdenhurst Road, close to Lansdowne and Bournemouth town centre.

Bagels by Soho serves generously filled New York-style bagels alongside locally roasted coffee, smoothies, matcha and sweet treats.

From classic salt beef and smoked salmon to halloumi, chicken shawarma and fully loaded breakfast bagels, the menu takes the familiar New York bagel shop and gives it a distinctly Bournemouth feel.

The idea behind Bagels by Soho came from spotting something that was surprisingly difficult to find locally.

While dedicated bagel shops are a familiar sight across London and New York, Bournemouth had far fewer places built entirely around them. The team saw an opportunity to change that, creating a casual neighbourhood spot where the bagel is the main event rather than simply another item on a café menu. 

That New York influence runs through the food. The shop offers different bagel varieties including classic, sesame and poppy, everything and multiseed, alongside a gluten-free option. Recent local coverage also reported that some of its speciality bagels, including everything and poppy varieties, are supplied from New York.

The menu at Bagels by Soho covers the classics you'd expect from a dedicated bagel shop, but some of the more unusual combinations are where things get interesting.

If you're after a traditional deli-style bagel, the Salt Beef is a natural place to start, filled with thick-cut salt beef, mustard and gherkins. There's also the Reuben, combining pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, tomato, mustard and gherkins, alongside the Lox Deluxe with smoked salmon, cream cheese, fresh dill, capers and pomegranate syrup.

For something a little different, the San Remo takes things in an Italian direction with prosciutto, creamy burrata, rocket and pesto dressing, while the Shawarma is filled with marinated chicken, pickled red onions and a citrus and mint yoghurt dressing. Then there's the CBA, bringing together chicken, crispy smoked streaky bacon and avocado with jalapeño mayo.

There are plenty of meat-free combinations too. The Halloumi pairs halloumi with hummus, tomato, baby spinach and sticky red chilli jam, while The Greek combines goat's cheese, pomegranate, pickled red onion, spinach and tzatziki.

There's a sweet side to the menu as well.

Sweet bagel combinations include banana with peanut butter and honey, blueberries with cream cheese and caramelised sugar, and Nutella with fresh banana and crushed hazelnuts. Cakes, Danish pastries, cookies and tray bakes are also available for anyone after something smaller alongside a coffee.

It's this range that makes Bagels by Soho work for more than a quick lunchtime stop. You can just as easily head in for breakfast, coffee or something sweet.

While the bagels take inspiration from further afield, the coffee keeps things local.

Bagels by Soho serves coffee from Bournemouth-based speciality roaster Bad Hand Coffee, with the usual flat whites and cappuccinos, alongside chai, matcha and hot chocolate.

The drinks menu has expanded beyond traditional coffee too, with iced strawberry and blueberry matcha, an iced Spanish latte, smoothies and milkshakes.

Smoothie choices include Super Green, Mixed Berry, Passion Wagon and Avo-Go-Go, while oat, soya and coconut milk alternatives are available. The current menu also offers optional additions including protein powder, creatine, collagen and lion's mane. 

It's a combination that suits the shop's location well: somewhere equally suited to grabbing a coffee on the way into town, meeting someone for lunch or picking up a loaded bagel to take away.

Located at 9 Holdenhurst Road, Bagels by Soho sits close to Lansdowne, within easy walking distance of Bournemouth town centre and the railway station area. 

The brand doesn't try to turn the bagel into fine dining. Its personality is deliberately informal, summed up by its tagline, “Putting the Soul in the Hole.”

That approach carries through the shop itself: bold branding, a casual atmosphere and a menu that's designed to be easy to understand while still giving regulars plenty of different combinations to work through.
